Artists. Webster was elected an associ-ate of the Royal Academy in 1840, in which yearhe produced Punch, a picture full of grotesqueincident and individual character. In 1841 appearedtwo pictures by which perhaps he is best knownto the present generation, and which are familiarto all by the engravings of the Art Union ofLondon—The Smile, and The Frown—thesubjects of which are drawn from the familiar linesabout the schoolmaster in Goldsmiths DesertedVillage. The Boy with many Friends, exhibitedat the British Institution in 1842, achieved analmost equal success, and in the year following hepainted picture after picture of a like character—The Grandmother, Going to School, The Im-penitent, Sickness and Health, and The Pedlar. In 1845 appeared The Dames School, made byengravings almost as familiar as The Frown, andThe Smile. In 1846 Webster became an Acade-mician, and from that time all his principal pictureswere to be seen on the walls of the Royal Academy. w Hco W& CO < o XH
