^ 5: E/3 OQ •5 PAINTERS AND ENGRAVERS. Haarlem, where he studied under Pieter Molijnfrom 1632-35. In 1635 he went to England, thento Italy. About 1641 he returned to Amsterdam,where he was very successful in the painting ofportraits on a small scale. In 1646-48 he was atMUnster, where the plenipotentiaries of Spain andthe delegates of the Dutch provinces were met toratify the treaty of peace with Philip IV. Hispicture of that event, with the portraits of theassembled delegates, is considered his masterpiece,and is now in the National Gallery. He was fondof painting pictures with some slight dramaticconnection. After leaving Munster, Ter Borchvisited the court of Spain, and was received withhonour by Philip IV., who knighted him. Fromthere he visited France and returned to Holland,where he lived from 1650-54 at Zwolle, and thenfinally he settled at Deventer, where he marriedhis cousin, and became a member of the towncouncil, and afterwards Burgomaster.
