nders of Rome, hewithdrew himself from his fathers house, andmade the best of his way to that city. He therehabitually copied the works of Raphael, Michel-angelo, and Caravaggio. His talents recommendedhim to the notice of Pietro da Cortona, who em-ployed him to assist him in the many considerableworks in which he was at that time engaged. Thebrilliant style of this master was particularly con-genial to the taste of Luca Giordano ; and he appearsto have aimed at excelling him in the facility andsplendour of his execution. His father, who hadlived in a state of indigence and obscurity, followedhim to Rome ; and from the produce of the talentof his son, whose designs after the works of thegreat masters were esteemed and sought after, hereceived a considerable emolument. Such was thedemand for his drawings and sketches, that hisfather continually urged him to despatch, by repeat-ing to him, Luca,fa presto, (Luke, make haste,)and hence he came to be designated by this phrase. c oo < u D
