f his assistants. This isclearly to be seen in such works as the picture ofthe Annunciation, in the church of San Giobbeat Venice, in which we note a partial return to themasters earlier manner ; and in the later polyptychof St. Anthony Abbot and other Saints, paintedin 1467 for the church of St. Anthony at Pesaro,and now in the Lateran Gallery at Rome. Thedate of Antonios death is unknown, but he appearsto have been still alive in 1470, in which year heis said to have decorated the church of SantApollinare at Venice with frescoes that have sincedisappeared. This is the last notice which wepossess, artistic or otherwise, in regard to him.One of the most interesting of Antonios unsignedworks, and one deserving of especial mention here,is the delightful panel of the Adoration of theMagi, in the Gallery at Berlin. This picture,long attributed to Gentile da Fabriano, showsmore strongly than any other the remarkableinfluence which the works of the Umbrian master I—I >o o <

<3 O 53 C/3 O H o <O a<; * PAINTERS AND ENGRAVERS. and bis contemporary, Pisanello, exercised overthe Muranese painter. It is, without doubt, avery early creation of Antonio, and was evidentlypainted quite independently of Giovanni, and veryprobably before his connection with that artist.Other very Gentilesque productions, also of anearly period, are the four predelle with scenes fromthe Lives of Christ and the Virgin (Nos. 1280-1283) in the Louvre, attributed by the catalogueto the school of Gentile da Fabriano.
