Hisfirst great success was in illustrating Evangeline,and after that he was sent up the Rhine th.at hemight make drawings for Hyperion, and for abook on the famous river itself From that timeto 1859 he illustrated many of the most notableworks of the day, especially of poetry, but atlength he determined to give up black and whitework and take to more congenial labour in colour.His first work in the Royal Academy representeda farm near Arundel, and was hung in 1859 ; inthe following year he was an Associate of the OldWater-Colour Society, and attained full rank as amember two years afterwards.
