These small panelawere evidently executed as companion pieces forGiovanni Bellinis Allegory, and, like that curiouslittle picture, once adorned the Medici villa atPoggio Imperiale, but the romantic treatment ofthe Bible stories, the brilliant colour and slendergrace of the forms already reveal Giorgiones strongindividuality. The same bold conception andlyrical fancy meet us in another early work, the Christ bearing the Cross formerly at Casa Loschiin Vicenza, now in Mr. Gardners collection atBoston. This Christ with the delicately-modelledfeatures and dreamy air is quite unlike the commontraditional representations of the subject,and haunteus with the power of its strange and mysteriouspathos.
