His literary productions were all connected withart; he edited, in 1842, a translation of Kuglers Italian Schools of Painting (subsequently re-edited by his widow) ; but his chief works werehis Materials for a History of Oil-Painting(1847), and Contributions to the Literature of theFine Arts (1848). In August, 1865, Sir Charles Eastlake left Eng-land, exceedingly unwell, for his usual annual touron the continent, taken with a view of acquiringfurther examples for the National Gallery. AtMilan he became seriously ill, but rallying slightly,pu-ihed on to Pisa, where he died December 24,1865.
