His sympathies were always verystrongly with the Italian people, whose tongue hespoke with the most perfect accuracy, and muchof bis life was spent in Italy, and there it was thathe died in January 190.3, in his own house inFlorence. He had tr.avelled far and wide, as atone time when in the Foreign Office he was withhis father in Venezuela, and his knowledge ofSpanish and of Spanish manners rendered him avaluable assistant in the settlement, for the time,of the boundary questions.
