ved a great hindrance to his artistic develop-ment, and he contracted an aversion to disciplineand to the ordinary habits of polite society. Hesubsequently studied desultorily in the studios ofBouchot. Abel de Pujol. David, and Ingres, andabout this period produced many small genreworks, pictures of dogs, horses, cattle, &c. To aman of his disposition, travel hud a great charm,and he spent some years in the south of France, inSwitzerland, in Italy, and in the Levant. It wasin the East that he found the subjects most suitedto his genius, and his oriental pictures were thefirst of a class in which there have been manyfollowers. Decamps constant aim, however, wasto obtain fame by historical painting. In 1834 heproduced a Defeat of the Cimbri by Marius, andin 1845 a series of designs illustrating the life ofSamson.
