dhim. He died at Antwerp in 1644, and was buriedin the church of St. Jacques. In the AntwerpGallery there is a Transfigurationby him; anotherversion of the same subject is at Nancy. VAN DEN MOORTELLE, (or Moortere,)Gherolf, a Flemish painter of the 15th century,was a pupil of Daniel De Rycke. He becameMaster in the Painters Guild at Ghent in 1453.In 1460-61 he was engaged on an altar-piece forthe church of Everghem-lez-Gand, jointly withLieven Van Den Bossche. VAN DER NEER, Aert or Arnold, born1604, at Gorinchem, removed to Amsterdam before1638, married Elizabeth Govers. He kept a wine-shop, but this does not appear to have metwith better success than his paintings, which wereso little appreciated that he became bankrupt in1662, but satisfied his creditors a few years later;he died poor, November 9, 1677. Scarcely any-thing is known of his life. He excelled in moon-light views, generally of towns, and groups ofcottages or fishermens huts on the banks of a river ww w G H W<

He occasionally paintedsunsets and often winter pieces, with figuresamusing themselves on the ice, in which he isscarcely surpassed. His best pictures have atransparency of colour, a lightness of band, ageneral freshness and sincerity, and a mastery ofcomposition, which gave them a very high rank inthe Dutch School.
