Crow Blackbirds belong to the family Icteridae which in-cludes also the Orioles, Bob-o-link, or Reed bird, Cow Bunting,Rusty Crackle, Red-winged and Yellow-headed Blackbirdsand Meadow Lark. In Pennsylvania we have only nine speciesand one geographical race of this family, which is a sort of con-necting link between the Crows and the Sparrows. The CowBunting or Cow Blackbird is the only species in the Statewhich builds no nest or makes no effort to look after its young.It is a veritable feathered parasite, with no musical ability.Cow Blackbirds never male; they are polygamous, and are atall seasons of the year seen in flocks. Like the Cuckoos ofthe Old World the Cow Blackbird drops her eggs in the nestgof other birds, such as Orioles, Warblers, Scarlet Tanager,Song Sparrow, Chippy, Vireos, etc.

Hteadl and neck all well defined,steel-blue, the rest of the body with varied reflections ofbronze, golden, green, copper and purple, the latter most con-spicuous, especially on tail, the tail coverts and wings. ^ewiaie.—Similar, but smaller and duller, with more green onthe head. Young.—Yery similar to female. The eyes of young birds arebrown. Male.—Measures about thirteen inches long and eighteeninches in extent. .Hafeiiae.—Atlantic States, from Florida to Long Island.Common summer resident in Pennsylvania.
