OF THE UNITED STATES. 295 even yet. It is a convenient style of machine for printing posters, placards,&c, in small offices. The first step in advance was in 1790, when the idea of a cylinder presswas broached. The original style of machine never came into First cyiin-use ; but the idea was a good one, and it became the theme of der Press-numerous inventors. A Saxon by the name of Frederick Konig built thefirst cylinder press to run by steam in 1814 for The LondonTimes. This style of press was introduced into the United Statesin 1830 by Robert Hoe, and Sereno Newton his partner, who built the firstpress in use in the country. Mr. Hoeimproved this press immensely; andhis son, Richard M. Hoe, has addedto its capacities still more. Theprinciple of the original cylinderpress was to cause the table bearingthe form to move horizontally backand forth under a large cylinder.This cylinder was supplied withpaper, a sheet at a time, the paperbeing held to the surface of thecylinder with tape
