aluarte de la Reinalleva en su interior un caballero de buena construcción que domina el terreno exterior, el cual por este frente va ascendiendoen suave pendiente hacia el alto de Mendillorri, que, aunque distante de la fortificación, está al alcance de la artillería gruesa yes por lo mismo un padrastro de la plaza. El frente de la Mag-dalena, formado por los medios baluartes Labrit y de los Canó-nigos y la larga cortina en ángulo entrante que los une, no tienefoso ni camino cubierto porque su principal defensa es el ríoArga, que corre á su frente casi en dirección paralela, y lagrande elevación que por allí presenta el terreno. El cuarto ladolo forman el fuerte de la Rochapea, el pequeño diente detrás delpalacio de la Capitanía General, el semi-baluarte de Guadalupe,y la cortina que une á éste con el de Redín. En este lado haytres puertas: la primera, abierta sobre la cortina á pocos pasosdel baluarte de Gonzagay se llama Puerta Nueva, la cual con- < ce< <

<oíw2O u<¡ H < O JCU < Cu 380 NAVARRA duce al camino ó carretera que se dirige á las Provincias Vas-congadas y á la estación del ferro-carril; la segunda, abierta enel mismo diente de la plataforma, es la Rochapea; y la tercera,en el pequeño frente que llaman de Francia, es la puerta deeste mismo nombre. Todas ellas sirven de paso al barrio de laRochapea y á las casas y huertas de la llamada isleta, que formael recodo del río en este paraje, y además para los caminos detravesía á Ártica y otros pueblos situados á la falda del montede San Cristóbal. Aunque las fortificaciones y el Arga estrechan á Pamplonahasta el extremo de dejar limitada su área habitable, en su lon-gitud máxima, á la corta distancia que media entre el ábside dela catedral y la fachada de San Lorenzo, no ha querido nuncala ciudad privarse del hermoso esparcimiento que le proporcio-na el campo de la Taconera, hoy ameno jardín, para aumentarpor el lado sudoeste su caserío.
