MEDIAEVAL ENAMELS the ruby, believed that in some way precious stoneshad been used in the manufacture of the glass.The aim of the painter, as of the shrine-maker, wasthen by no means to make a picture, but to give theeffect of a blaze of precious stones. And in theearly reliquaries we find precious stones and glassenamels all mixed up together. In the building of these cathedrals and towardsthe making of the windows and shrines, it is in-credible what labour and sums of money wereexpended. Nobles and burghers harnessed them-selves to the carts that drew the stones and con-tributed a substantial part of their incomes towardsthe expenses. Instead of decorating their ownhouses, they thought almost exclusively of thehouse of God. Would that it could be added thatall this was pure unselfishness. The personal andselfish hope of escaping the penalty of their sins(and in those days they committed plenty of them)had a great deal to do with their liberality. Thiswas coupled with the feeling tha
