here in avery pretty pattern.Delicate woodlandvines surround theferns and form apleasing tangle inthe border. A curtain of atotally differentstyle, and one es- Lamp-post: German Court, INDUSTRIAL ART. 251 sentially French in character, is seen in the next illustration on page 245, whichis engraved as a specimen of lace exhibited in the French Court. This curtain,from the pictorial nature of the design, is evidently intended to hang perfectlyflat, as otherwise theharmony of the out-line would be spoiled.Here, too, about theborder we have fernsand wood-plants in-terwoven with scrolls,but the central subjectis a little naked Cupidstanding upon a pe-destal, and bearingupon his shoulder asheaf of lilies whichhe has been gather-ing. Springing upon either hand andframing him with theirleaves are floweringgrasses, while abovethe little fellow aresuspended the em-blems of his craft,guarded over bybirds. It is pleasantto picture in onesmind all the appoint-ments of a room inwhich such curtains
