by Lieutenant Horace Hal-deman, U. S. A., chiefly at Fredericksburg and Fort Gates, on thewestern frontier of Texas; and by Mr. Richard Kern, in a jour-ney across the plains to Santa Fe. In the latter case, the speci-mens were thrown into bottles of spirits as collected, so that thereis nothing to distinguish those which were found upon the routefrom those of Santa F6; but as the greater part probably ap-pertain to the latter locality, this has been used to Mr, Kernsspecies. LEPIDOPTERA. Papilio asterias, Cramer. A specimen with the patagia yellow, and forming a continuouslateral yellow line with the spots upon the thorax and head. Cynthia cardui, Linnaeus. A specimen of this species, which is (^mmon in Europe and theUnited States, and one of the most widely spread species known,occurring in India and Africa. Among the most interesting entomological discoveries in theimperfectly explored parts of the United States territory, that ofthe three new species of the genus Lahidus must be included. Thisis a tropical form, and almost exclusively confined to Brazil, themost northern species hitherto described being from the West In-dian island of St. Vincent. The three species were discoveredat Fort Gates by Lieutenant Haldeman. Labidus 8AJI, Hald. PI. IX. Fig. 1-3.Luteous, head brown above, and having (with the mandibles andbasal articulation of the antennae) piliferous punctures; stemmatalarge, and the posterior ones twice as far from each other as fromthe eyes; face excavated below the antennae, with the lateral cari-nae sharp or angular, and the medial line impressed; mandibleslarge, tapering slowly, and curved from the base.
