ntGunnison, who were engaged on the flats on the eastern side of thebay; lest, in the darkness, they should miss their way, and beunable to return. At dusk a large signal-fire was built on thehilltop, and guns were fired at intervals to attract their attention.But the night passed without their appearing. Early the following morning they came into camp, covered fromhead to foot with salt and mud, cold, wet, hungry, and thoroughlyexhausted. A more forlorn-looking group it has seldom been mylot to behold. Anticipating their arrival in some such plight, Ihad had an early breakfast prepared, with plenty of hot coffee; afterpartaking of which, they were immediately wrapped in blankets,and a sound sleep restored them to their accustomed strength.The following extract from the journal of Lieutenant Gunnisonwill give an idea of what they endured in the course of the night.The storm overtook them in the midst of the extensive mud-flats r DO W oo o >zo w a paoo 3 c H HI o > Qw> r r>

Lieutenant Gunnison says: Theskiff was dragged for half a mile into three inches water, when thewind suddenly shifted to the north, and blew a tremendous gale.Our course was north, and we endeavoured to force our way withfour men wading by the sides of the boat, but the gale was toopowerful for them, and drove the whole company off the course, sothat by the time we were in one foot water, we were obliged tostop; the spray dashed over the boat in showers; the rain and hailcame down in torrents; and soon all hands were drenched to theskin. The mist shut down upon us, and we could only see a fewsteps around. It was nearly sunset, and rapidly growing dark.The men became bewildered, and despaired of reaching camp, de-claring that they could not survive till morning.
