The hind-legs of E. scincicauda are slightly longer and stouterthan the anterior, not taking the toes into consideration, as thoseof the hind-feet are generally much the longest. The head is flat-tened, and has the shape of an acute triangle, the summit of whichwould be rounded. The snout, therefore, is rather elongated, withthe end conical. The plates which cover its upper surface aresmooth, and faithfully represented in fig. 3. The scales of theback constitute twelve or thirteen rows, each of which is providedwith a medial carina, or ridge, extending over the tail. The scalesof the belly and lower surface of the tail are smooth; on theabdomen they form twelve rows, the middle one being composed oflarger scales. Fig. 2 exhibits the differences of the scales underthe head, throat, belly, and tail. The scales form transverse aswell as longitudinal rows, not only on the tail, as is often thecase, but likewise on the body itself. Those on the throat and

Possessing only specimens that have been immersed in alcohol,and therefore have lost their general hue, we can only, in allusionto the colour, remark that the upper parts of body and tail havetransverse and irregular, sometimes undulating, and sometimesangularly broken bands of deep brown or black. Ten of thesebands belong to the body from the occiput to the origin of the tail.On the tail itself they extend more or less toward the tip, accord-ing to the size of the specimen. This species inhabits Oregon, about the Dalles of the Colum-bia River, where it has been collected by Rev. George Geary. Aspecimen in our possession, from California, was collected byColonel Fremont.
