From Zacate the road follows one of the tributaries of thePanuco, until, passing through the canon of El Abra, it descendsinto the plains bordering on the gulf. Between Canoas and Las Palmas are many important water-powers now unused. In order to avoid difficulties in engineering the line was con-tinued to the north, avoiding the larger streams, but crossingmany small rivers, until it reaches the Tamesi, five miles fromTampico. The plains west of Tampico are perfectly adapted to the culti-vation of all tropical productions. Their fertility is unlimited;transportation facilities, both by land and water, are first class ;labor is abundant; land is cheap ; and there is no tropical regionin the world so free from the malarial complaints peculiar tosouthern and well-watered countries. On the bottom-lands ricecan be raised, and in the foothills to the westward which riseto 3,500 feet above sea level, all the various subtropical fruitsgrow luxuriantly.
