30 inches On the rigkt, trees in mass and, in the center ofan opening between two of the largest of the treesthrough which the light of late afternoon breams,there ^ands a birch with feathery top, the trunk:showing silvery again^ the foliage of the trees at theright. The foreground is grassy, of a rich green withWretches of clay or sand showing red. At the left,two willows much cut back, but with a few slenderbranches covered with foliage and giving considerablemass to this detail. In the center, a great tree has fallenin the river and the huge gnarled trunk is shown atthe right of the willows. The sky is full of the goldof midsummer afternoon relieved at the top by greatclouds. The river is of a calm silvery tone and thehills appearing on the opposite bank are rich and warmand fully colored. The pidlure is altogether a veryserene and beautiful example, exceedingly poetic andis evidently a work of his later years. Signed at the right, H. D. Martin._COLLECTION OF RALPH CUDNEY, ESQ. 68
