Dr. Wilson was succeeded by Dr. Robert Bridges,19 who hadbeen elected to membership in 1835. There probably has neverbeen one among those devoted unobtrusively to the interests ofthe society who rendered more efficient service than Dr. Bridges.He had served at various times as Librarian, Recording Secretary,Corresponding Secretary, Auditor and Vice-President, and dideffective work on numerous standing and special committees,including those on the Library, Publications, Finance, Botany,Entomology, Herpetology and Ichthyology, Physics and Chemis-try. His unassuming modesty was like that of his predecessor,and after one year in office he declined a re-election, and was 19 Biographical Notice of Dr. Robert Bridges, by W. S. W. The Academy of Natural Sciences 169 succeeded by Dr. Isaac Hays20 whose early services to the society,especially as Curator and Chairman of the Publication Com-mittee, established the propriety of his election, for there is nodoubt that to his zeal and ability alone was due the continuationof the first series of the Journal. He presided with dignity andefficiency for four years, and was then succeeded by Dr. William S.W. Ruschenberger. Notwithstanding the space provided by the additional storycompleted in 1855, the need of more room for the arrangement ofthe collections was again becoming urgent. A committee offorty was appointed in December, 1865, to solicit subscriptions forthe erection of a fire-proof building on a lot of ground not lessthan three times the size of the one then occupied and as closeto it as possible. In January, 1867, a Board of Trustees of theBuilding Fund was elected by the subscribers, Dr. Ruschenbergerbeing made Chairman, George W. Tryon, Jr., Secretary, andWil
