an uninhabited wilderness, there existed anestate covered with fine pasturage, which seemed tous as if it had fallen from heaven, so grateful to oureyes was the sight of the green grass and the shrubsand trees, among which I observed some malvaceseand mimosse. This estate supported immense herds of cattle,which roamed half wild over the contiguous plain.A large number grazed near a neighbouring encamp-ment, where the herbage afforded a bountiful supplyof pasturage. We noticed that these animals wereattended by flocks of a kind of falcon which alighted^ fearlessly on their backs in search of the garrapatasor ticks that infested the skin. These birds arecalled garrapateros, from preying on the tiny para-sites. George looked at me with a self-satisfied ex-pression, indicating that a brilliant thought had sud-denly struck him.
