Among thepurchasers of his water-colours were, it may benoted, both I^eighton and G. Y. Watts, so even atthat stage his ability was sufficiently conspicuous toattract the attention of men well qualified to forman opinion about his work. It is also worth re-cording, as evidence of his early proficiency as anexecutant, that he was engaged by Leighton toassist in the painting of the Daphnephoria, and byH. T. Wells to do similar work on the canvases ofthat fashionable portrait painter. Mr. Cotmans career as a student was markedby many successes. He took several medals, andamong them the gold medal for historical painting.The picture which gained him this award.
