The forsaken village sites had amelancholy aspect, and they seemed to be the favouriteplayground of elephants, tracks of which we had alreadyseen in the forest. Everything was trampled andtorn down, and in the whole banana plantation therewas not a branch intact, the elephants having run riotto their hearts content. Probably all this devastationwas the work of but a few animals, though to theuninitiated it would appear to be due to a large herd. A storm overtook us just as we reached these desertedvillages, and in five minutes we were soaked to the skin.We knew that it would take us at least an hour to reachour camping place, and the worst obstacle still laybefore us in the shape of the Loma River, now a ragingtorrent, far overflowing its banks.
