Inorder to obviate the necessity for the driver tomount the waggon during the operation of collec-tion, the vehicle has an auxiliary starting-lever andalso an auxiliary steering-wheel projecting from the1 near side, so that the waggon can be steered asthe men walk along the footpath. The auxiliarystarting-lever is seen at A, and the steering-wheelat S. The ordinary steering-wheel is upon thefootboard at W, the driving starting-lever Land the brake-lever H being on the off sideand worked from the seat T. Such a refuse-waggon, having a metallic body about 10 feet inlength, will carry fifty-six bins. The waggon, oncommencing its rounds, would be filled with emptybins, one of which would be left at each house fromwhich a charged bin was removed. At the de-structor the bins would be placed upon a conveyerand emptied mechanically into the charging hopperof the destructor. By means of this system of motor-collection ofhouse refuse, which would be hygienically perfectand far more expeditious than the present horsesystem, the refuse could conveniently be collectedin the early morning, and a dust-cart never makeits appearance in a Garden City. The refuse destructor, an important attribute ofmodern urban sanitation, is one, the operations ofwhich are invariably attended with disagreeableresults to the community. In the first place, theburning of refuse by the solid-fuel process entailsthe building of a lofty and unsightly chimney.
