Garden City authorities and theirarchitects, therefore, have it in their power to do twothings—to make the cities hideous or to make thembeautiful. Which will they do ? Commercialinstinct will decide, if artistic feeling should be atfault. In these days it would be false economy tobuild an ugly town. Artistic treatment in thisrelation would prove the best investment. I feel that the practical utility of the remarks Iventure to make under the heading of this chaptermight be enhanced were I to make them directlyreferable to the actual site purchased for the erectionof the First Garden City. This has already beendone by a company promoted and brought intobeing through the persistent efforts and exertionsof that most laudatory coterie of well-doing in-dividuals—at first a very small but happily deter-mined and ever-increasing band—the Garden City 124 B
