Wooden floors of the ordinary con-struction supported upon wooden joists or rafters, as they are sometimes erroneously called,act in a precisely analogous manner to the sound-boards of pianos ; every sound made above isamplified and reproduced below. To prevent thisgreat defect, various expedients have been resortedto, as, for example, putting in a complete dampingdiaphragm by connecting the joists together atabout half their depth by an open flooring ofsmall battens, and then filling up the whole of theupper space with plaster.
