Alexander von Parma, wie er meist in der deutschen Geschichtschreibung genannt wird, war der Sohn der bekannten Statthalterin der Niederlande, Margarethe von Parma, einer der natürlichen Töchter Karls V. Er selber, ein ausgezeichneter Heerführer, bekam 1578 jene niederländische Statthalterschaft übertragen.
