emerged fromthis old loft, covered with cobwebs and dustand candle grease, I bore in my arms a loadof volumes that I had long been searching forand which the old bookseller parted with fora very modest sum. As a matter of fact I believe the good-hearted old chap rather pitied me when Iasked him if he had charged me enough, forhe said: This is all clear gain to me, sir.Ive been in this business for a good manyyears and you are the first man who evercame here looking for old Pathologies. Ihave to take the things in, in the way of lots,but I never sold any of them before. Alas^for my honored specialty! I felt depressed,despite my unearthed treasures. Buying books, by the way, is the leastbothersome thing one can do abroad, theyare so quickly disposed of. When I buy abook I have it done up securely, write myname and home address on it, stamp it, anddeposit it in the nearest post-office. Howthey went to an old parish church and sawthe culmination of an episode that began ina Berlin pension which happened to houseat the same time a youthful American medicalman and a young and charming Welsh lady.But all of this is a secret. And far be itfrom the writer to betray confidences. Liverpool is not only journeys beginningbut sad to say it may be likewise *journeysend.
