Sea. They were stalwart, warlike, and inured to arigorous northern climate. Apparently the rudiments of family andof tribal life were being cultivated. While not possessing the wonderful artistic ability of their Cro-Magnon predecessors, the men of the New Stone Age made potteryand wove textiles. They continued to use chipped stone implementsbut originated the practice of polishing them as well. They becamefood producers rather than food gatherers, raising cereals and keepingflocks and herds instead of depending upon hunting. They lived inmore or less settled communities and built villages of huts, often onpiles near the shores of lakes. They erected great sepulchres andtemples of huge stones (dolmens and megaliths) for their dead. Theywere the true forerunners of civilization. The New Stone Age in Europe was followed by the Ages of (opperand Bronze and finally of Iron, during which the great civilizations ofEgypt, Mesopotamia, Assyria, Persia, India, China, and Europe weredeveloped.
