Title |
Helmet crest holder |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy crest-holder from a Roman legionary helmet ('Coolus' type) of the 1st century AD. The complete terminal of this holder is conical in shape, with a base diameter of 26mm and measuring 25mm in height. There is a central slot across the it, which is rectangular in shape with rounded corners, measuring 4mm in width and 10mm in depth. At the tip of the holder, which is divided in two by the slot, there are two opposing circular perforations, measuring 3mm in diameter. Below these perforations there are transverse groves, which appear to have been caused by wear. The conical terminal is waisted and then there is a flared base. This is now broken, it is hollow and circular in cross-section, measuring 18mm in diameter. This flared base was originally attached to the top of the bronze helmet with solder. This crest-holder has been identified by Ralph Jackson of the British Museum and similar examples have also been found at Chichester (Bishop and Coulston 1993, 94-95, fig 58, no 2). |
