llode Messine, le fougueux imitateur des Flamands, drape à lantique (toge nouéesur lépaule gauche, tandis que lépaule droite est découverte) et couronne dulaurier traditionnel le poète dont il nous a conservé limage dans le superbeportrait du Musée municipal de Milan. Dans un autre ouvrage, une fresquepeinte en 1490 pour légHse Saint-Nicolas de Venise, Antonello représentedeux soldats armés à lantique, « due armati allantica ». Jean et Gentil Bellin,Carpaccio, Cima da Conegfiano, nont pas moins à compter avec ces réminis-cences, quils subissaient à leur insu, parfois malgré eux. Chez les enlumineurs de manuscrits lornementation joue un rôle plus pré-pondérant que chez les peintres; aussi, par une conséquence quil était facile deprévoir, les éléments antiques dominent-ils chez eux. On sattache surtout àreproduire les chefs-dœuvre de la gravure en médailles ou de la glyptique desanciens, notamment les bustes en profil se détachant en blanc sur un fond noir.

Ces réminiscences font dabord leur apparition dansles manuscrits des Médicis (Bibliothèque Laurentienne et Bibliothèque Natio-nale de Florence); ils passent ensuite dans ceux des souverains de Naples, duduc dUrbin, des Sforza, de Mathias Corvin*. Un de ces derniers, enluminé par Attavante, nous offre, outre la repro-duction de la fameuse intaille des Médicis, Apollon et Marsyas, une frise com-posée de Tritons (peut-être inspirée par la gra-vure de Mantegna), uneScène de Triomphe avec desprisonniers barbares lesmains liées derrière ledos, des médailles dem-pereurs, des camées, etc.Un livre de prières lom-bard, enluminé entre lesannées 1460 et 1470, à laBibliothèque BodléiennedOxford, est égalementenrichi de camées et demédailles.
