FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel, A. D. 1580. At first they were drawnby two horses only. It was Buckingham, the favorite, who(about 1619) began to have them drawn by six horses, which,as an old liistorian says, was wondered at as a novelty, andimputed to him a mastering pride. Captain Levi Pease wasthe first man to put on a regular stage between Boston andHartford, about 178L The first post-route to New York, over which MadamKnight travelled in 1704, went by the way of Providence,Stonington, New London, and the shore of Long IslandSound. The distance was 255 miles. AVe subjoin the itin-erary of the road as far as Providence : — From Boston South-end to Eoxbury Meeting-house 2 miles,thence to Mr. Fishers at Dedham 9, thence to Mr. Whites * 6, toMr. Billings 7, to Mr. Shepards at Wading River 7, thence to Mr.Woodcocks t 3, from thence to Mr. Turpins at Providence 14, or tothe Sign of the Bear at Seaconck 10, thence to Providence 4, toMr. Potters in said town 8. * Stoughton. + Attleborough.

Sated with honors, he died at Anteuil, near Paris,August 21, 1814. Titles, decorations, and the honorary dis-tinctions of learned societies flowed in upon the poor Ameri-can youth such as have seldom fallen to the lot of one risenfrom the ranks of the people. The antecedents and characterof the man have very naturally given rise to much inquiry andspeculation. Benjamin Thompson was born in the west end of his grand-fathers house in J^orth Woburn, March 26, 1753. The roomwhere he first drew breath is on the left of the entrance, andon the first floor. As for the house, it is a plain, old-fashioned,two-story farm-house, with a gambrel roof, out of which isthrust one of those immense chimneys of great breadth andsolidity.
