The frightened deer madeconstant attempts to break through the cordonof men and boys, but most of them wereshot upon nearing the circle. The officersconstantly cautioned the men not to fire, ex-cept toward the centre. Finally, after the firehad slackened materially and upon a givensignal, the most experienced hunters, pre-viously selected, advanced toward the centrewith orders to kill all the bears and wolves,if they could without endangering each otheror those in the lines. They soon succeededin killing most of those animals within thecircle. Then, upon signal, the hunters climbedtrees in order to make plunging shots and notendanger those in the circular line, who wereordered to advance upon the centre without-firing, except after an animal had succeededin passing through the line.
