The following incident, related to the author by a reliable gentle-man, is worthy of a place in the annals of Georgia :— During one of the attacks of the Indians upon the inhabitants of this frontiercounty, they succeeded in killing a number of persons. On one occasion they tookprisoner a small girl about twelve years of age. There was living in the countyat the time a man by the name of William Suttle, a gunsmith by trade, who,upon hearing that the savages had gone off with the little girl, determined topursue them, rescue the captive, or die in the attempt. Providing himselfwith an excellent gun, he started on his generous mission; and after a shorttime, in the middle of the night, came in sight of the party, who were seatedaround a fire, and noticed the little girl sitting upon the lap of a brawny Indian,who appeared to be much delighted with his prisoner.
