It is bounded N. by Dover, E. andSE. by bays of the Atlantic, and SW. by Little Egg Harbor town-ship, Burlington co. ; Little Egg Harbor and Barnegat bays stretchalong in front of the township, to the east of which is an unbrokenbeach, excepting at the Barnegat inlet, through which vesselsenter. On the main land, next to the water, is a strip of saltmarsh, varying from one quarter to three miles in width; alongon the shore, below the main post-road, the soil is fertile and thereare some excellent farms. MONMOUTH COUNTY. 369 are in the township 9 stores, 1 grist-m., 4 saw-m. ; 7 schools, 215scholars. Pop. 2,149. Manahocking, a flourishing village 45 miles from Freehold, con-tains a Baptist and a Methodist church, saw, grist, turning, andcarding mills, 2 taverns, 3 stores, and about 40 dwellings. Wood,lumber, and cedar rails are exported in considerable quantities fromthis village. About 15 or 20 coasting vessels sail from this andthe other places in the township, which carry off, with the otherproducts of this timber country, large quantities of charcoal, herean article of increasing production. Barnegat, 4J miles N. of Mana-hocking, has 3 taverns, 3 stores, and about 30 dwellings. Waer-town, <\h miles from Manahocking, has a tavern, store, and a fewdwellings. Westecunk, 5 miles below Manahocking, contains 2stores, a tavern, saw-mill, and about 30 dwellings.
