DARIUS THE GREAT. Chapter I.C A M b y s e s. Cyrus the Great. His extended conquests. ABOUT five or six hundred years beforeChrist, almost the whole of the interiorof Asia was united in one vast empire. Thefounder of this empire was Cyrus the Great.He was originally a Persian; and the wholeempire is often called the Persian monarchy,taking its name from its founders native land.Cyrus was not contented with having an-nexed to his dominion all the civilized statesof Asia. In the latter part of his life, he con-ceived the idea that there might possibly besome additional glory and power to be acquiredin subduing certain half-savage regions in thenorth, beyond the Araxes. He accordinglyraised an army, and set off on an expeditionfor this purpose, against a country which wasgoverned by a barbarian queen named Tomyris.He met with a variety of adventures on this 14 Darius the Great.
