Darbyto Philadelphia, where it was probably joined by stragglingparties who had not reached Chester : one of these, accom-panied by a wagon load of the wounded, with a surgeon, reachedGibbons tavern in Springfield about ten oclock on the night ofthe battle. Here their wounds were dressed and their Avantssupplied with everything the house could affbrd. They leftearly in the morning, for fear of being overtaken by the enemy.^ While the American army was stationed on the Brandywine,Washington occupied the dwelling of Benjamin Ring, a milefrom Chadds Ford, as his headquarters. This house is nowowned and occupied by Joseph Harvey, and has undergonesome modifications since it was occupied by the father of hiscountry. The annexed lithograph represents the appearancethe building then presented, as nearly as those who had beenacquainted with it could convey the same to the artist, with theexception that it then had what is called a hipped roof. The procession that accompaniedthe General to the Brandywine battle-ground, stopped in frontof the house while he paid his respects to old Oide(jn, who wasthen on his death-bed. This property is now owned by SamuelPainter, who has erected a neat mansion near the old house,which yet remains in nearly its former condition. A little above the road leading from Dilworths town toBrandywine, on the descending ground, there stood a smallhouse occupied by a man named Brown at the time of thebattle. When Brown discovered that the Americans were re-treating, followed by the British, he ran out of his house, andhuzzaed for King George at the top of his voice.
