WELLS.Mr. Wells, whose name Btand.f at the head of thisbiographical notice, was the son of William Augustus andI)eborah Converse Wells, and was born in tlic county ofOnondaga, in New York State, iti 1813. His early lifewa.s uneventful. At an age wiicn mo.st lads arc engaged inHtudious occupations, he relinquished school for the more serious labor whereupon depended his subsistence. Heengaged in farming pursuits until twenty-one years of age,when an opportunity for acquiring the blacksmiths tradeoffered and was accepted by him. This was followed withzeal for a period of eight years, when the cheap lands ofMichigan having pre.icnted superior attractions he removedto the West, and purchased one hundred and twenty acres

SUNFIELD. 513 in the township of Sunfield. He settled upon this land in1841, his mother only accompanying him. It was in themidst of a forest, with no near neighbor, and no suggestionsof civilized life immediately adjacent. In December of thesame year he was married to Miss Mary, daughter ofAbram Chatfield, one of the oldest of the townshippioneers. Mr. and Mrs. Wells have had six children: John, Ellen, Henry, Evangeline, Frederick, and William.He has by his industry and capacity established a reputa-tion as one of the most successful farmers in the township,while his character for integrity has won for him therespect and admiration of all his fellow-townsmen. Mr.Wells is a Republican in his political preferences, but notintolerant in his opinions.
