Southwestern geography, wanted Mrs. Caswell to run overfrom Dallas to El Paso during her recent visit to the former city; therunning over implying thu*ty-six hours of continuous railroad travel—twelve hours longer than is required for tbe journey from New York toChicago. Texarkana, in Northeast Texas, is nearer to Chicago than toEl Paso in the same State. In area, Texas is fifty-six Connecticuts—our Congregational unit. It isalmost six New Yorks, and tbe Panhandle, tbat small projection ofTexas northward, is as large as Indiana. The census of 1890 will probably show Texas to be the third of theStates in population—coming next after New York and Pennsylvania.The estimates of the soberest statisticians of the population of Texas threedecades hence are staggering; the lowest estimate is 22,000,000! No one need dreamof the dissipation of this tremendous force by the partition of Texas intofive, or any other number of States. It never was seriously considered inTexas, and now is never mentioned except with emphatic disapproval. Itshoidd be remembered that Texas came to the sisterhood of States fromthe sisterhood of nations, and that she has a grandly heroic history of herown. of which her sons are justly proud. They read upon the base of theAlamo monument at Austin that comparison to their own advantage withthe most heroic achievement of the most heroic of the ancients. Ther-mopylae had its messenger of defeat, the Alamo had none. Just now Texas is turning with enthusiasm to the development of herwonderful resources, and to the encouragement of immigration.
