h he soonafter removed, was characteristically unostentatious. FromKichmond he frequently walked out three or four miles to hisfarm in the county of Henrico; and once a year he made aprotracted visit to his other farm, near his birth-place, inFauquier. No man had a keener relish for social and convivial enjoy-ments, and numerous anecdotes are told in illustration of thistrait in his character. Nearly all the period of his residencein Kichmond, he was a member of a club which met near thecity once a fortnight to pitch quoits, and mingle in relaxingconversation; there was no one more punctual in his attend-ance at its meetings, or who contributed more to their pleasant-ness ; and such was his skill in the manly game he practised, that he would hurl his iron ring, weighing two pounds, withrarely erring aim, fifty-five or sixty feet, and when he or hispartner made any specially successful exhibition of skill, hewould leap up and clap his hands with the light-hearted en-thusiasm of boyhood.
