HORSE-BREEDINGIN ENGLAND AND INDIA AND ARMY HORSES ABROAD Horse-Breeding in 1884 More than twenty years since I drew attention to theneglect displayed in England in the breeding of Horses.Stress was then laid upon our increasing dependence onforeign countries for supplies of horses of the generally usefulstamp ; and upon the mistaken policy of selling to Continentalbuyers the mares we might with profit to ourselves retainfor breeding purposes at home, if such mares are properlymated. The Present State of Affairs Much has happened to alter the general condition ofaffairs since those words were spoken ; since the first editionof this book appeared in the year 1901, the change in somedepartments of road transport in Britain has been increasinglyrapid. We have seen the horse-drawn tramcar replaced inmany cities by the electrically driven car ; and the motor-driven omnibus threatens now to displace the horse-drawnvehicle. * A Paper read in 1884 at the Farmers Club.
