The rule to-day in base ball is for the manager who is sup-posed to be familiar with every phase of the game and has thefaculty to size up the talent to select the timber for his ball team,picking each man for a particular position, including a utilityplayer. After selecting the players the next thing is to pick outthe right player to captain the team. This player must be ableto work with the manager and the other members of the team.The manager should give his orders to the captain and not un-dertake to meddle with the captains prerogative. The manager has actually grown to be more of a peacemakerfrom the bench than a directing general, so advanced have becomethe members of the leading teams. A captain should be an outfielder if possible, as he will be ina position to observe everything that is going on. The assistantcaptain should be an infielder, and direct the plays on the inside,
