, for purposes of navigation. We get a glimpse onthe right of patient perfection of gardening, where aman is pruning his grafted fruit-trees; farther on, agroup of substantial farm-buildings. On the oppositeside of the road stretches a long, flat meadow, or pol-der, up to the little village which nestles so snuglyaround its tall church tower; the latter fulfilling also thepurpose of a beacon, lit by night, to guide the wayfareron sea and land: a scene of tireless industry, comfortableprosperity, and smiling peace, snatched alike from theencroachments of the ocean and from the devastation ofa foreign foe, by a people as rugged and aspiring asthose poplars, as buoyant in their self-reliance as theclouds. Pride and love of country breathe through thewhole scene; and we may be dead to some very whole-some instincts if we ourselves do not feel drawn, on theone hand, toward its sweet and intimate simplicity, and,on the other, toward the fearless matter-of-factness ofits composition.
