Many nice-looking people strolled about there.It is not a fashionable place, but one where thefairly well-to-do spend their summer holidays, andthe difference in appearance of such people inHungary from those in some neighbouring countriesis marked. They are very tastefully, if simply,dressed; there is a well-bred air about them.The fat and formless figures which annuallyinvade Austria, from the North, hung with opera-glasses and skirts that are looped up, revealingwhite-stockinged ankles and elastic-sided boots;and the no less sturdy gentlemen in shirt-sleeves,with perspiring faces and hobnailed enormities,who accompany them, are as yet almost unknownhere. From Barlangliget onwards the road mountedrapidly, and a brawling stream flowed down besideit—the first thing, so far, to get at all near myheart. ZSDJAR 165 left; smaller ones, or wooded hills, were on theright. No farms or other buildings were to beseen until, after two hours driving, we approachedthe long straggling line of widely-separated houses,extending for three miles, which is called Zsdjar,and is situated near the top of the pass. Many of the grey-roofed log-houses, with red-lined windows, were set far back from the road,amid narrow starved-looking fields. In placestwo or three were close together; in others,nearly a quarter of a mile divided them. Theroad was hilly, and a few spindly willows—notpollarded—grew beside it. Meadows sloped downto a sm.all river two hundred yards away, andbeyond that steep pine-covered slopes rose upagain to bare dark mountains. All was tiiste,and green, and grey. It was a Sunday morning, and we had proceededfar through the deserted place before a crowd ofpeople, returning from church, began to top thehill on the road before us.
