The glamour of the Prelates protec-tion being over us, our position as persons of thehighest respectability was also soon established. Our modest lodgings (none more magnificentwere obtainable had we desired them) were situatedat the least fashionable end of the town—thatfarthest from the Cathedral—and not far fromsome sandy stretches of waste ground which formedone of the most fascinating painting-grounds I haveever known. There were many shallow pools ofwater on them, and willows and tall spreadingpoplars, which composed in an endless variety ofinteresting forms. The sandy ground was fine intone, and the scanty vegetation on it just right.The sunsets and their reflections were often mag-nificent. Unfortunately, it was an extremely wetseason, but whenever I could venture out I used togo and sketch there. We were told afterwards that ON THE WASTE LANDS NEAR KALOCSA

Several schoolboys also lodged at the ropemakers,in rooms farther up the court than ours. Theywere nice boys, always very well behaved and pohteto us. We used to pity them ; for, though one ortwo played \iolins, beyond that they seemed tohave no sort of recreation.
