Then suddenly I found outwhat caused them, and, though at first myannouncement was treated with incredulity andcontempt, it was soon found to be correct. In acorner of the room there was a tall tiled stove.There had been no fire in it that day, but on theother side of the wall there had been a large firein the kitchen. In general, the towns we saw throughoutHungary looked new; and, indeed, we were morethan once—until we became wary—sent to placessaid to be most interesting, only to find that newmunicipal buildings, new banks, new schools, streetsin course of construction, electric trams and electriclighting, were their chief attractions. But therewere places that well repaid a visit, and of theseone was Locse, (German, Leutschau), chief town ofthe Zips country, near to the Tatra. Sometimescalled the Nuremberg of Hungary—though thecomparison suggested is too ambitious—it has avery fine thirteenth-century Gothic church and apicturesque town-hall, which stand close togetherin an open place, surrounded by houses in manycases old and charming.
