In general, the towns we saw throughoutHungary looked new; and, indeed, we were morethan once—until we became wary—sent to placessaid to be most interesting, only to find that newmunicipal buildings, new banks, new schools, streetsin course of construction, electric trams and electriclighting, were their chief attractions. But therewere places that well repaid a visit, and of theseone was Locse, (German, Leutschau), chief town ofthe Zips country, near to the Tatra. Sometimescalled the Nuremberg of Hungary—though thecomparison suggested is too ambitious—it has avery fine thirteenth-century Gothic church and apicturesque town-hall, which stand close togetherin an open place, surrounded by houses in manycases old and charming.
