The outside handles make thedropping of the cut-off boards very convenient and muchreduce the liability of neglect on the part of the attendant. DRIVING PULLEYS One-beater machines, 16 in. dia., 4X in. face, T. & L.Two-beater machines, 16 in. dia., 5^ i^- face, T. & L.Other sizes can be furnished. SPEEDS—The usual speed of countershafts is 435 revs.per minute, which gives 1,450 revs, of the two-blade beatersand 1,068 revs, of carding beaters. For long staple cottons thebeater speed is reduced to 800 to 1,050 revs, per minute. PRODUCTION—On ordinary cotton 12,000 to 15,000 poundsper week of sixty hours. These productions are often exceeded.For long staple cottons, 8,000 to 10,000 pounds. For produc-tion table, see page 87. 35IMPROVED EVENER. The obtaining of even laps is a matter of primeimportance. The demand for more perfect workhas emphasized the need for better picking^ and forlaps which are even not only in total weight, butthroughout. Our improved design fills the follow-ing essential qualifications of a good Evener. 1st—Sensitiveness and prompt action, so thatany variation in the weight passing under theEvener Plates will be taken care of immediatelv. 2d—Steadiness of running and action, so thatthere is no tendency to hunt, /. c., the conebelt will at once take its new position without trav-eling up and down. od—Simplicity and few moving parts. 4th—Small amount of attention required. The direct method of communicating any move-ment of the Evener Plates to the cone belt, themultiplication of this movement and the shortcones are features which help to secure sensitive-ness and prompt action.
