ol. Later on little Bachwa was placed in the Homefor untainted boys at Almora, and in order to benear him, the mother was transferred to the LeperAsylum there. Just at the time of my visit to Almora,both Bachwa, now grown to a fine, healthy boy, andhis mother passed through a severe trial. A verysuspicious sore showed itself on Bachwas toe, andthe hospital assistant pronounced it to be leprosy.The grief of both mother and boy was heartrending,as they knew what a terrible fate that would mean.However, Mr. Bulloch pleaded for delay, so as to bequite certain before poor Bachwa should be trans-ferred from the happy Childrens Home to be almostthe only child-leper in the Asylum. Meanwhile,the Civil Surgeon was consulted, and he, to theunspeakable joy of Bachwa and his mother, declaredit to be, not leprosy, but only a sore arisingout of an accident to the foot. CHANDAG HEIGHTS 153 lepers and the insight I was enabled to get intothe whole work, will remain among the most cherishedmemories of my Indian visit. Miss Reed provedherself a most able and sympathetic interpreter ofthe addresses 1 was privileged to give, and it was, Ibelieve, a relief and a refreshment to her to hear theold truths proclaimed in a fresh voice, and phrasedperhaps in a new way. On the first Sunday morning of my visit, as thenew church had not yet been publicly opened, thewomen assembled in the open air for a service at9 oclock. Yuhanna (the male catechist), Timah (anative Evangelist), and Miss Reed all took part, andI added a few words of greeting at the close. It was apathetic sight as the sad and hungry eyes lookedout from the maimed faces, and the lepers drank in the words of eternal life from the lips of her who hasbecome so strangely linked with them in theiraffliction.
