rwherein he could work for himself and family. With aforesight and energy that would have won him a positionanywhere, he had recognized a need in his village, andprovided for it. From the interior, by this one road,passed all the traffic to the capital, and those who hadoxen and ponies for sale, and were taking them to thebazar or market-place in Alexandrovsk, made this theend of one of their stages; and very naturally so, sincethey had generally to wait for the tide. The little court-yard, which generally forms part of all Siberian cottagesor huts, in his case was extended to make room for thecattle; and the shelters enclosing it provided the droverswith beds of hay. The cottage boasted two rooms, occupiedby our host, his wife, and three children. The eldest, adaughter of about twenty, had joined them quite recentlyfrom the Caucasus, and to her was evidently due a dainti-ness, rare in Sakhalin huts, about the little room into whichwe now entered from the kitchen. A RIDE THROUGH THE TAIGA 325 here also, always a sign of affluence on the island, whichwas offered to us; but we politely refused, electing tosleep on the floor. Upon this the daughter went intothe cow-byre and fetched hay to spread on the floor,and then standing by, watched, with a sense of amazementstealing over her face, my interpreter spreading our rugsand skins on the hay. When this was done, she turnedto my companion, and asked him— Is the English barin a very celebrated person ? Why? Oh, she said, I have seen great generals in theCaucasus, and they slept on the hay ; I have never seenany one sleep on so many rugs before ! I was scarcely prepared for such primitive con-ceptions among Russians, and I can assure the readerthat, had he met us after dark on an English high-way, he would have taken us for foot-pads rather thanprinces. The next morning a troika galloped up from the postto take us on to Alexandrovsk. Our way was througha winding valley, hemmed in by pine-clad slopes;
